COVID-19 – Excess Mortality Dashboard

Developed in partnership with the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass), the tool aimed to reveal the real impact of COVID-19 on mortality in Brazil. The dashboard compares the deaths from natural causes recorded with the number of deaths expected for the period, highlighting both the direct effects and indirect impacts of the pandemic, such as the overload of health services and the interruption of treatments. Updated until 2023, the dashboard supported national and subnational administrators in monitoring the pandemic and formulating effective responses.

169
epidemiological weeks were monitored by the dashboard between 2020 and 2023.
1.1 million
excess deaths were revealed by the dashboard, drawing attention to the even greater impact of the pandemic than was showed by the approximately 700,000 confirmed deaths from COVID-19.
200+
articles were published in Brazilian newspapers calling attention to the excess mortality data revealed by the dashboard.
